How does the Ombuds work?
The Ombuds Office follows four key principles. These are confidentiality, neutrality, informality and independence.
The Ombuds will NOT discuss an individual’s case with anyone else unless permission is given. The only exception will be when they believe there is an imminent risk of serious harm either to their visitor or other members of the KAUST Community.
The Ombuds role is always impartial. They cannot take sides in any conflict, dispute or issue. This means that they cannot advocate on behalf on an individual. But this does not mean that they cannot help and support you resolve your problem as best they can.
Meeting with the Ombuds is an informal process. The aim is to try and resolve issues without the need to more formal courses of action. The Ombuds is unable to participate in any formal University investigations or complaints procedures. Detailed records of individual cases are not kept and written notes will be destroyed.
The Ombuds acts independently. They report to the VP for Academic Affairs on case trends and policy issues only, not on the details of individual cases.
The Ombuds for Student-Related Matters at KAUST follows the Code of Ethics and Professional Standards of Practice as defined by The International Ombudsman Association (IOA)
